How can we help?

Nutrition, domestic origin, and carbon footprint calculators

Updated 2 months ago

In S-mobiili, you can track the nutrient breakdown of your purchases, the domestic content of your groceries, and your shopping basket's carbon footprint at product category level. The calculators are based on your own purchase data.

What is the nutrition calculator and how does it work?

The nutrition calculator shows the nutrient proportions of your purchases and compares them to recommendations.

What nutrients do you see?

  • Carbohydrates

  • Sugar

  • Fibre

  • Proteins

  • Fats

  • Saturated fats

  • Salt

The calculator gets its data from food package nutrition labels. Recommended values are based on Finnish nutrition recommendations, the Fineli database, and EU regulations.

Household consumption or personal?

The calculator shows the nutrient proportion from the food you buy in your entire shopping basket and compares this to official recommendations. It doesn't matter how many people eat in your household.

Example: If the recommendation is 20% sugar of total energy and your or your family's purchase share is 25%, your purchases' sugar content is about 5% above recommendations.

Why aren't all nutrients from my purchases shown?

Products whose weight or nutrient data aren't available to the service don't register in the service.

For example:

  • Some loose products from fresh counters or bakeries

  • New products (there may be delays in visibility)

  • Multipacks (nutrition data isn't reliably available)

The service's product data coverage is continuously being improved.

What is the domestic origin calculator and how does it work?

In the domestic origin calculator, you track the domestic origin of ingredients and production for the food products you buy. The domestic content is calculated from the value of your shopping basket.

You can see domestic origin information even for individual products.

How is domestic content categorised?

The calculator illustrates the share of domestic food purchases at two levels:

1. Products with domestic ingredients and production

  • Ingredients are domestic

  • Product is manufactured in Finland

  • Domestic origin is guaranteed by Hyvää Suomesta and Sirkkalehti labels

2. Products manufactured in Finland

  • Product is manufactured in Finland

  • Ingredient origin may be other than Finland

The calculator also shows foreign food purchases as their own list.

What is the carbon footprint calculator and how does it work?

The carbon footprint calculator shows your shopping basket's carbon footprint at product category level. You see how climate impacts are distributed between different product categories.

The calculator is based on your own actual consumption data.

How was the calculator developed?

The food carbon footprint calculator was developed together with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). Luke's product category-specific climate impacts are based on the latest research.

What has been included in the calculations?

The carbon footprint calculator includes:

  • Agricultural production

  • Processing

  • Packaging

  • Transport to store

What has NOT been included in the calculations?

Land use changes and carbon reserves aren't included in the calculations. Carbon reserve assessment methods in particular are still under development. They haven't been possible to include for all products originating from different countries.

How does the calculation work in practice?

Every purchased product in your shopping basket is included in the calculation. Instead of an individual product's carbon footprint, scientifically researched product category-level carbon footprint data is used.

Example: For calculating an individual milk carton, the carbon footprint value for the entire dairy product category is used.

The calculations also account for the origin of the best-selling products in categories where origin has particular significance:

  • Beef

  • Vegetables

  • Fish

  • Grain products

The calculator uses your own purchase data, giving you the best possible understanding of your own shopping basket's climate impacts.
